Iraq summons US envoy after deadly strike on its base
Baghdad condemns attack as violation of sovereignty, warns of response after soldiers killed in escalating regional conflict
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Iraq has summoned the United States chargé d’affaires in Baghdad following a deadly airstrike on a military base that killed seven Iraqi soldiers and injured at least 15 others, in what officials described as a serious breach of international law.
The strike targeted the Habbaniyah base in western Anbar province, reportedly hitting a military medical facility and an engineering unit, raising alarm over what Iraqi authorities say is a dangerous expansion of US military operations inside the country.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s office condemned the attack as a “heinous crime,” stressing that Iraq would not remain silent in the face of repeated violations of its sovereignty. Officials warned that the assault could further damage relations between Baghdad and Washington and destabilize an already volatile region.
The Iraqi government said it would lodge a formal complaint with the United Nations Security Council and other international bodies, signaling a potential escalation in diplomatic tensions.
The United States has been carrying out airstrikes in Iraq for weeks, claiming to target Iran-aligned militia groups. However, the latest attack appears to have directly struck units linked to Iraq’s official security apparatus, including elements associated with the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), which operate under state authority.
Earlier strikes this week reportedly killed at least 15 PMF members, including a senior commander, intensifying accusations that Washington is broadening its campaign beyond non-state actors to include forces integrated into Iraq’s national defense structure.
Iraqi officials and militia groups have denounced the attacks as acts of aggression, accusing the United States of turning Iraqi territory into a battleground for its wider confrontation with Iran. The PMF described the strikes as a “blatant violation of national sovereignty,” warning that such actions risk dragging Iraq deeper into a conflict not of its choosing.
Despite mounting casualties and criticism, US officials have continued to justify their operations as defensive measures, offering limited transparency about the scope and targets of their strikes.
The incident comes amid the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, which has already resulted in widespread casualties and regional instability, further fueling concerns over the erosion of international legal norms and the growing disregard for state sovereignty.
