Iran seizes foreign oil tanker over fuel smuggling in Sea of Oman
Authorities detain 17 crew members as investigation launched into vessel carrying 2 million liters of illicit fuel
TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — Iranian authorities have seized a foreign oil tanker in the Sea of Oman on charges of smuggling approximately 2 million liters of fuel, officials confirmed Tuesday.
The operation was announced by Mojtaba Ghahremani, Chief Justice of Hormozgan Province, who said the vessel was intercepted during routine maritime monitoring near Iran’s southern waters.
The tanker reportedly failed to present valid documentation for its cargo and was taken into custody on suspicion of fuel smuggling.
Seventeen individuals—including the captain and crew—were detained as part of the enforcement action. The tanker was transferred to the port of Jask, where a judicial case has been opened.
Ghahremani noted that authorities are currently verifying the exact volume and origin of the fuel through laboratory testing and analysis of cargo samples. The investigation is also examining the vessel’s legal documents, ownership, and intended destination.
No details have yet been released regarding the nationality of the ship or its final port of call.
The judicial official emphasized that the seizure follows ongoing surveillance of suspected fuel smuggling operations in the region.
He stated that the results of the investigation will be made public once legal procedures are completed.
Iran has stepped up efforts in recent years to crack down on fuel smuggling in the Gulf and surrounding waters, which it says undermines national resources and regional security.
