Iran launches counterstrikes after Israeli airstrike on Beirut breaches ceasefire
Missile exchanges follow Israeli attack on Lebanon amid repeated Israeli violations of fragile US-brokered truce
TEL AVIV, Israel (MNTV) – Iran launched multiple waves of missile counterstrikes toward Israel following an Israeli airstrike on Beirut that killed and wounded civilians, escalating tensions and threatening to unravel a fragile ceasefire arrangement agreed earlier this year.
Israeli authorities said at least four waves of missiles were fired from Iran toward Israeli territory, marking the first such large-scale exchange since a US-brokered ceasefire took effect in April. Israel’s military said its air defenses intercepted the incoming missiles, though sirens sounded across several regions.
Iranian state media confirmed the missile launches, describing them as retaliatory counterstrikes in response to what it called Israel’s continued violations of regional ceasefire understandings, including a deadly strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs earlier on Sunday.
The Beirut airstrike, which targeted a residential area, killed at least two people and injured around 20 others according to Lebanese health officials. The attack drew widespread condemnation and was described by regional observers as a further escalation that undermined already fragile diplomatic efforts.
Iran warned that continued Israeli attacks in Lebanon would expand the scope of the conflict, arguing that repeated strikes against Lebanese territory risk collapsing ongoing mediation efforts between regional actors and international stakeholders.
Israeli officials said the Beirut strike was carried out in response to earlier cross-border fire from Hezbollah, which Israel accuses of acting with Iranian support. Hezbollah confirmed launching attacks toward northern Israel earlier in the day.
The latest exchange comes despite ongoing international mediation efforts involving Washington, Pakistan, Egypt, and Qatar aimed at stabilizing the broader conflict landscape. Diplomatic sources say talks remain stalled amid continued military actions on multiple fronts.
While Israel claims its operations are defensive, critics argue that repeated strikes inside Lebanon and Gaza have repeatedly undermined ceasefire commitments and triggered retaliatory cycles across the region.
The situation has raised renewed concerns over the durability of the US-brokered ceasefire framework, which now appears increasingly strained as both sides accuse each other of violations and escalation.
