Iran expands solar-hydro energy synergy to drive renewable transition
Floating solar power projects on dams aim to boost grid stability, cut emissions, and conserve water
TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — Iran is accelerating its shift toward renewable energy by launching a new initiative that combines solar and hydroelectric power, aiming to stabilize the national grid and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
Under a new agreement signed with the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA), the government will begin constructing solar power plants at strategic hydroelectric dam sites across the country, reported Press TV.
The initiative targets the addition of 500 megawatts of solar capacity as part of Iran’s broader goal to diversify its energy mix.
Officials say the hybrid model will maximize the strengths of both sources: solar energy’s daytime availability paired with hydropower’s capacity to provide electricity at night.
This synergy is expected to improve grid reliability, particularly during seasonal fluctuations in water levels and solar output.
A key feature of the strategy involves deploying floating photovoltaic (PV) systems on reservoirs and dam surfaces.
These floating solar plants eliminate the need for expensive land acquisition near urban centers and benefit from cooler temperatures on water, boosting efficiency by up to 10%.
Iran’s first floating solar pilot project was launched at the Mahabad Petrochemical Plant using locally manufactured floating structures. Building on its success, larger-scale installations are now being planned.
In addition to enhancing energy production, floating solar installations also help reduce water evaporation from reservoirs — a crucial benefit in a country facing severe water shortages and droughts.
Experts note that while the technology presents engineering and financial challenges, such as fluctuating water levels and higher installation costs, its environmental and long-term economic benefits make it a viable investment.
Iran, which has historically relied heavily on hydroelectricity, sees the combined use of solar and hydro power as a way to compensate for declining hydropower output during dry seasons and to maintain a steady electricity supply year-round.
Despite facing international sanctions and funding constraints, officials remain optimistic that this renewable strategy will position Iran as a regional leader in sustainable energy development.
