Iran and US agree on 60-day roadmap and joint oversight mechanisms at Switzerland summit
Parties establish high-level committee and technical working groups as talks conclude in constructive atmosphere
The talks, the first meeting of what has been designated a High-Level Committee, were held under the mediation of Qatar and Pakistan, both of which described the discussions as unfolding in a “positive and constructive atmosphere” and said they had produced “encouraging progress.” The following are the key outcomes, as outlined in the mediators’ joint statement.
The summit’s most significant structural outcome was the formal establishment of a High-Level Committee to provide political oversight of the entire mediation process.
Beneath it, the chief negotiators from the U.S. and Iran will each lead dedicated working groups covering nuclear issues, sanctions, monitoring and dispute resolution, and other implementation-related matters.
On the central question of timing, the parties agreed on a 60-day roadmap toward a final agreement, building on the framework laid out in the Islamabad MOU and creating the basis for immediate technical negotiations. Those technical talks are set to continue for the remainder of the week in Burgenstock, addressing all outstanding issues.
Two specific mechanisms were agreed upon to manage ongoing security concerns. A dedicated communication channel was established to prevent incidents and miscommunication in the Strait of Hormuz and ensure safe passage for commercial vessels through the waterway.
Separately, the parties agreed to create a Lebanon “de-confliction cell” — involving Lebanon itself and facilitated by the mediators — to monitor adherence to the cessation of military operations in Lebanon as required under the memorandum.
Qatar and Pakistan both reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining a constructive atmosphere and supporting the process as it moves toward a final agreement.
