Indonesian scholarship recipients seek new study destinations after US measures
Indonesia Endowment for Education says students will be given options to transfer to institutions in other countries
JAKARTA, Indonesia (MNTV) — Following recent changes in U.S. visa policy for international students, Indonesia Endowment for Education (LPDP) has announced several measures to support affected scholars.
LPDP says it will continue to fund all 406 impacted students — including 360 planning to start their studies in the U.S. this autumn and 46 currently enrolled at Harvard.
LPDP is working with key government bodies such as the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Indonesian embassies to address the issues.
Students will be given options to defer, transfer to institutions in other countries, or pursue online learning.
It has advised Indonesian students already in the U.S. to avoid international travel for the time being.
The Indonesian government has said it is exploring study opportunities at top universities outside the US for the country’s students on government scholarships.
Indonesia’s Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto has said the government is committed to ensuring that Indonesian students can continue their education in the US without disruption.
“We are initiating discussions with top universities in other countries to assess the feasibility of transferring students’ academic programmes,” Yuliarto said in an official statement on May 29.
