India is Not Canada’s Friend: CSIS Report

At a time when Prime Minister Mark Carney is seeking closer economic ties with India’s Prime Minister Modi to counter Trump’s tariffs, a report from Canada’s spy agency, CSIS, reveals that India is one of the main perpetrators of foreign interference and espionage against Canada.

Foreign interference, as defined in the CSIS Act, includes activities that negatively impact Canada’s interests and are clandestine or deceptive. These activities aim to undermine democratic institutions and may target specific cultural communities within Canada.

According to the 49-page CSIS report, “Historically, India has cultivated covert relationships with Canadian politicians, journalists, and members of the Indo-Canadian community to exert influence and advance its interests.”

The report also highlights transnational repression (TNR) activities, including surveillance and coercive tactics designed to suppress criticism of the Government of India and instill fear within the community.

CSIS warns that, given the presence of supporters of the Khalistan separatist movement—which seeks to establish a homeland for Sikhs in India’s Punjab region—Canada must remain vigilant against potential TNR targeting members of this community.

For years, India has portrayed itself as the world’s largest democracy, the land of Gandhi and non-violence, but this image no longer holds. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has displayed a troubling pattern of interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations. The latest revelations from CSIS confirm longstanding suspicions: India is not merely an actor on the geopolitical stage, but an orchestrator of clandestine operations aimed at subverting democratic processes.

The “largest democracy” in the world poses a threat to democracy everywhere.

CSIS’s findings serve as a wake-up call for democracies around the globe. India’s foreign interference is not an isolated event; it is part of a broader strategy to exert influence through covert operations. By engaging in election meddling, financial corruption, digital propaganda, and even targeted assassinations, India is employing tactics from its new BFF, Israel’s fascist playbook, to systematically undermine democratic norms wherever it seeks to expand its influence.

Political experts widely agree that the international community must respond decisively to this provocation. Proposed actions include diplomatic sanctions, intelligence-sharing agreements, and enhanced cybersecurity cooperation to counter India’s subversive tactics.

The international community needs to take a firm stance against India’s covert operations to protect democratic institutions and maintain global stability.
