How Can a Tech Billionaire Predict Pandemics?
Almost six years after he took the stage to warn the world about the likelihood of a global pandemic caused by a respiratory virus, Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates has once again spoken out. In a recent interview with a YouTube influencer, Gates discussed what he believes could be the next two major threats to humanity: climate change and bioterrorism.
Bill Gates’ 2015 TED Talk titled “The Next Outbreak? We’re Not Ready” gained renewed attention in March 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically affected the world.
It’s important to remember that following the prevention of a global Ebola virus outbreak in 2014, Gates had cautioned about the potential for a future pandemic and urged that the world be prepared for such an event.
In a video call on February 4, Gates had expressed his thoughts about having correctly predicted the pandemic, stating that he doesn’t feel good about it: “There is no good feeling that comes with something like this.” He added that he sometimes reflects on whether he could have been more persuasive in his warnings.
When questioned on how he could so accurately predict a global outbreak back in 2025, Gates explained that, given the prevalence of many respiratory viruses worldwide, it was inevitable that one would eventually cause a pandemic.
