GTA Traffic Alert: Road Closures Over the Next Few Weeks Starting This Weekend.
Attention, Torontonians! Drivers traveling to and from Toronto in the coming weeks should consider alternate routes.
City officials have announced that the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) will be closed on two separate weekends for maintenance work, further complicating already busy alternate routes.
Closure Details:
– This weekend, the Gardiner Expressway will be fully closed from the Humber River to Spadina Avenue, starting Friday at 11 p.m. and reopening Monday at 5 a.m.
– The second closure will affect the DVP, which will be completely shut down from Highway 401 to the Jarvis Street ramp on the Gardiner. This work is scheduled for the weekend of May 8, beginning at 11 p.m. on Friday and reopening at 5 a.m. on Monday, May 11.
These closures come at a challenging time for sports fans, as the Toronto Blue Jays will be playing both weekends, the Raptors will host the Cavaliers for Game 3 of the NBA Playoffs on Sunday afternoon, Toronto FC will face Atlanta United on Saturday afternoon, and the Marlies may have a playoff game on Sunday.
Please note that the closures are weather-dependent and may be rescheduled if necessary, according to the City of Toronto.
Why Now?
“This planned work supports the City’s long-term strategy to maintain expressway infrastructure, minimize future disruptions, and prepare Toronto for major events, including the FIFA World Cup 2026,” officials stated in a news release.
In total, these closures will amount to more than 30 overnight road closures, allowing crews to work more efficiently and ensuring their safety, which is expected to save drivers up to 150 hours of disruption.
Maintenance Work Includes:
– Repairs to cracks and potholes
– Maintenance and replacement of guardrails
– Bridge inspections
– Removal of loose concrete
– Repainting of lane markings
– Lighting inspections and repairs
– Clearing catch basins to prevent flooding
– Removal of debris, weeds, litter, and graffiti
Additionally, crews will complete paving of the eastbound lanes of the Gardiner between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue, as part of the City’s long-term Gardiner Expressway Strategic Rehabilitation Plan, and will work on paving the Jameson Avenue off-ramp.
The closure of the DVP will allow crews to resurface sections of the parkway, continue work on the Eastern Avenue bridge project and the Bayview-Bloor ramp, provide Metrolinx access for work on part of the Ontario Line project, and provide Toronto Hydro access for electrical maintenance.
Be well and stay safe.
