GTA Season Change: Late Fall Expected This Year.
According to Ontario Parks, the province will not experience the typical change in leaf colors at the same time this year. Higher temperatures are keeping leaves green until closer to late September.
For those hoping to see vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows without traveling far from the city, October is projected to be the best time to view fall foliage. Currently, several parks across the region report predominantly green leaves, with only about a 10 percent change in color.
In the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), particularly in the Rouge and Don Valley regions, there has been no significant color change yet. Ontariofall.com forecasts peak fall colors from October 9 to October 17, with a confidence range of about one week. The site specifically predicts the season’s peak around October 12.
Tree Canada, a non-profit organization dedicated to planting and nurturing trees, explains that shorter days and cooler temperatures cause chlorophyll to break down, revealing hidden pigments in the leaves.
Environment Canada has reported that a strong El Niño pattern is contributing to milder weather in the province, which is delaying the transition into winter. Unfortunately, these warmer-than-usual conditions mean that leaves won’t begin to change color until later in the month.
Additionally, Ontariofall.com notes that Toronto typically sees its fall colors changing later than regions further north. Therefore, if other parts of Ontario are beginning to change, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the city is about to reach peak color.
Currently, the forecast predicts a low likelihood of fall-color viewing for the coming weekends, with September 12–13 and September 19–20 expected to remain mostly green in the Rouge and Don Valley areas.
