Grand Mosque in Saudi Arabia enhanced with over 120,000 lights for Hajj 2025
Saudi Arabia upgrades spiritual ambiance and infrastructure as millions of pilgrims arrive for annual pilgrimage
MAKKAH, Saudi Arabia (MNTV) — The Grand Mosque in Makkah now features over 120,000 lighting units, including approximately 6,900 large chandeliers and more than 500 uniquely designed lanterns and lamps.
These fixtures, many adorned with Quranic calligraphy and inspired by Islamic art, are strategically placed throughout the mosque’s courtyards, roof, minarets, and expansion areas, reported Saudi Press Agency.
A dedicated control station utilizing advanced global lighting technologies manages the intensity and distribution of these lights, ensuring a harmonious and spiritually uplifting environment for worshippers.
This enhancement aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to improve the Hajj experience. In 2025, the Kingdom has implemented significant measures to address challenges faced by pilgrims.
Over 1.5 million foreign pilgrims have arrived for this year’s Hajj, which is expected to take place from June 4 to June 9.
To combat extreme heat, which reached up to 41°C (106°F) last year, Saudi authorities have deployed the world’s largest mosque cooling system, planted 10,000 trees for shade, and increased medical staffing.
Additionally, new regulations have been introduced to enhance safety and accessibility.
Children under 12 are now prohibited from participating in Hajj, and first-time pilgrims are given priority to ensure broader access.
Unauthorized pilgrims face fines up to $5500, deportation, and a decade-long entry ban. These measures reflect Saudi Arabia’s commitment to modernizing the pilgrimage while preserving its spiritual essence.
The integration of advanced lighting systems in the Grand Mosque not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also symbolizes the Kingdom’s dedication to providing a safe and spiritually enriching environment for millions of pilgrims.
