Gaza update: Israeli strikes kill 33 in 24 hours as hunger crisis deepens
Shelters and tents hit in fresh bombardment; UN warns half a million face starvation amid Gaza’s deepening humanitarian catastrophe
GAZA, Palestine (MNTV) – Israeli air and drone strikes have killed at least 33 Palestinians in the last 24 hours across the Gaza Strip, with children, women, and displaced civilians once again among the casualties.
As the war enters its eighth month, the death toll continues to rise along with fears of famine.
One of the deadliest attacks occurred in Jabaliya, in northern Gaza, where an Israeli airstrike hit a school-turned-shelter, killing 17 people, including five children and four women.
Medical sources reported multiple injuries as families had gathered in the building to seek refuge from ongoing bombardment.
Elsewhere, in the central city of Deir al-Balah, Israeli drones targeted civilians, killing four people, including one in a direct strike and another who succumbed to injuries from an earlier attack.
The southern city of Khan Younis witnessed more bloodshed as multiple Israeli airstrikes targeted tents sheltering displaced families in the Al-Mawasi area. At least seven people, including four children, died in three separate strikes on makeshift shelters.
Another airstrike on a bicycle rider in the same region killed a young man, according to medics. In Gaza City, a child was killed in an artillery strike, while a mosque on Old Gaza Street in Jabaliya was also targeted, injuring two Palestinians.
The pattern of strikes on areas presumed to be civilian shelters has drawn sharp criticism from humanitarian agencies, as eyewitnesses describe unrelenting artillery fire in eastern Khan Younis and Abasan al-Kabira, where the Israeli military has intensified operations.
Meanwhile, Gaza’s Health Ministry reports the cumulative toll of the war has reached at least 52,862 dead and over 119,648 wounded.
The Government Media Office puts the death toll even higher—over 61,700—citing thousands still buried under the rubble.
This latest round of violence comes amid a mounting hunger crisis.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) warns that the entire population of Gaza—2.1 million people—faces acute food insecurity, with at least 500,000 now on the brink of starvation.
The report projects that 470,000 Gazans, or nearly one in four, will fall into the “catastrophic” hunger category by September if the current blockade continues.
The IPC says this represents a massive deterioration since its last assessment in October 2023, when 133,000 people were at catastrophic risk. It blames the worsening outlook on Israel’s blockade of aid and the ongoing military campaign. The brief accompanying its findings said the aid plan announced by Israel on May 5 is “highly insufficient” to meet basic survival needs.
Since March, Israel has sealed off most of the Gaza Strip, significantly restricting humanitarian access, even as it intensified its ground and air campaign.
In Gaza City, residents describe entire neighborhoods flattened, especially in eastern districts like Al-Tuffah, where demolitions continue under Israeli military presence.
As the blockade reaches day 71, humanitarian organizations warn that unless urgent international action is taken, Gaza may face a full-blown famine, adding starvation to the list of atrocities endured by its war-weary population.
