Gaza reels as Israeli strikes kill 59 in 24 hours
At least 59 Palestinians, including 23 people waiting for humanitarian aid, have been killed in the past 24 hours
GAZA, Palestine (MNTV) – At least 59 Palestinians, including 23 people waiting for humanitarian aid, have been killed in the past 24 hours as Israeli forces intensified their assault across the Gaza Strip, the enclave’s Health Ministry said Friday.
Another 224 people were wounded.
Medical sources reported dozens of deaths since dawn, including two in the Zeitoun neighborhood of southwest Gaza and a child in Khan Younis in the south.
Israeli strikes also targeted the so-called “humanitarian zone” of al-Mawasi, while attacks on homes in al-Bureij refugee camp and Tal al-Hawa killed several more.
The Health Ministry said 23 Palestinians were shot dead while waiting for food and flour, bringing the total killed in aid lines since May 27 to more than 2,200. Officials warned of famine conditions worsening under Israel’s continued blockade.
Five more Palestinians, including two children, have also died of starvation, raising the toll from hunger since October 2023 to 322, among them 121 children. Officials said aid deliveries remain a fraction of what is needed.
Only 467 trucks entered Gaza over the past five days, compared to the 3,000 planned. Of more than 2,600 trucks that entered last month, many were looted “with Israeli complicity,” the Government Media Office said. Israel has kept all border crossings shut since March 2, blocking thousands of waiting relief trucks. Humanitarian groups warn that famine is worsening, with children the most vulnerable.
Adding to the crisis, the director of Gaza’s al-Shifa hospital, Muhammad Abu Salmiya, reported a “new virus” spreading in overcrowded shelters. Symptoms include fever, joint pain, cough, and prolonged diarrhea. He said the outbreak stems from malnutrition, unsafe water, and poor sanitation, straining Gaza’s already overwhelmed health system.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army declared Gaza City a “dangerous combat zone” and said it had begun “preparatory operations for a powerful assault.” The move ended temporary pauses in fighting around the city. The military also announced it had recovered the body of captive Ilan Weiss and belongings believed to belong to another hostage.
Since the war began, Israel’s offensive has killed at least 63,025 Palestinians and wounded more than 159,000, according to Gaza’s authorities.
