Dr Mumtaz Patel becomes first Muslim president of Royal College of Physicians
Patel, first Indo-Asian Muslim to be elected president, vows to modernise organisation and support its members
LONDON (MNTV) – Dr Mumtaz Patel, an Indian-origin Muslim consultant nephrologist from Manchester, has been elected the 123rd president of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP).
With over 40,000 members worldwide, the RCP is a prestigious medical institution, and Patel’s election marks a significant milestone as the first Muslim to hold this esteemed role.
Born to Indian immigrant parents in Lancashire, Dr Patel has had a distinguished career, contributing extensively to medical education and healthcare.
She has held numerous leadership roles within the RCP, including senior censor and vice president for education and training.
Throughout her career, Patel has focused on modernising the RCP and reaffirming its role as a representative voice for its members.
In her presidential campaign, Patel emphasised the need for modernisation and improving healthcare delivery, particularly through supporting RCP members at every stage of their careers.
She has promised to bring a values-driven approach to leadership, backed by over 20 years of RCP experience.
“I will lead the RCP to be the best organisation it can be,” said Patel, highlighting her vision for the future.
Patel’s leadership has been praised by her peers, including Dr Diana Walford CBE, chair of the RCP Board of Trustees, who commended her for her integrity and ability to rebuild trust within the organisation.
Dr Anthony Martinelli and Dr Catherine Rowan, co-chairs of the RCP Resident Doctor Committee, also expressed their support, emphasising the importance of empowering early-career doctors and equipping them for future challenges.
