Deadly blast at Kashmir police station kills nine as seized explosives detonate
At least nine people were killed and 29 others injured when a cache of confiscated explosives detonated inside a police station in Srinagar
SRINAGAR (MNTV) – At least nine people were killed and 29 others injured when a cache of confiscated explosives detonated inside a police station in Srinagar, the main city of Indian-administered Kashmir.
The blast took place late Friday night at the Nowgam police station, located on the southern edge of Srinagar.
A source quoted by Reuters said efforts to identify the victims were ongoing because several bodies were “completely burned.”
The force of the explosion was so powerful, the source added, that body parts were found in nearby homes up to 100–200 meters (110–220 yards) away.
Most of those killed were police personnel and forensic specialists who had been inspecting the seized explosives at the time of the detonation, according to unnamed officials cited by Indian broadcaster NDTV.
Two members of the Srinagar district administration were also among the dead.
With five victims reported to be in critical condition, authorities fear the toll could rise.
The explosion in Srinagar comes days after a deadly car blast in New Delhi, which killed at least 12 people near the historic Red Fort. Indian officials have described the New Delhi incident as a “terror” attack.
Hours before that blast, police had claimed to arrest several suspects and recovered assault rifles and explosive materials.
Police in Indian-administered Kashmir have also detained more than 650 people as part of their investigation into the New Delhi car explosion.
