Backlash grows after Manchester United co-owner’s immigration remarks
Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the comments as “offensive and wrong,” urging Ratcliffe to apologise
MANCHESTER (MNTV) — Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe is facing mounting criticism after claiming the United Kingdom had been “colonised by immigrants,” comments widely condemned as inflammatory and aligned with far-right rhetoric.
In an interview with Sky News aired Wednesday, Ratcliffe argued that “huge levels of immigration” had harmed the economy, referencing the number of people receiving state benefits. His remarks triggered swift political backlash.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the comments as “offensive and wrong,” urging Ratcliffe to apologise. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham called the language “inaccurate, insulting and inflammatory,” rejecting any portrayal of migrants as a hostile force.
Burnham pointed to the contributions of overseas footballers and migrant workers in the National Health Service, arguing they have strengthened the region’s social and economic fabric.
Justice Minister Jake Richards also criticised Ratcliffe, noting the businessman’s residency in Monaco and questioning his authority to comment on patriotism and taxation.
Fan groups responded with equal force. The Manchester United Muslim Supporters Club said the use of the term “colonised” echoed narratives that depict migrants as demographic threats, warning such rhetoric can fuel real-world hostility.
The Rainbow Devils, a supporters’ group, said the remarks risk harming minority communities, including immigrant fans loyal to the club.
The Manchester United Supporters’ Trust stressed that club leadership should promote inclusion rather than deepen divisions.
Ratcliffe, founder of chemicals giant Ineos, acquired a minority stake in United in 2023. His tenure has already drawn scrutiny from supporters amid rising ticket prices.
