On October 2 (today), gas prices rose by 6 to 7 cents in certain parts of the city. Furthermore, predictions for Saturday suggest another increase of about 7 cents, bringing the price per liter to approximately $1.92, according to industry experts.

However, relief may be on the way.

Dan McTeague, president of Canadians for Affordable Energy, advises drivers to hold off on filling up until Sunday. Why? Gas prices are expected to decrease by 7 to 8 cents on that day.

The reasoning behind this expected drop is clear. Today, it was reported that G7 countries have agreed to release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil from their emergency reserves in response to pressure from Donald Trump.

That said, analysts caution against assuming the price drop will last, as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt global oil supplies.

"It's a short-term gain, or at least a moderation of prices, but we're looking at a much longer, more painful situation ahead," McTeague stated. "I don't think we'll be out of this predicament for several months to come."
Amid our hectic lifestyles and the urgent desire to pursue the Canadian dream, many of us may not have had the time to explore "Canada's Muslim story." Key questions often overlooked include: When did we start arriving in Canada? When were the first places of worship, our masajid, constructed? What role, if any, did our predecessors play in establishing Canada as we know it?

With the arrival of October and the onset of Islamic Heritage Month in Canada, we at Muslim Network TV and GTA Muslims Today firmly believe that it's time we discover this history—not just for our own sake, but to help our future generations develop a strong understanding of our past in this land we call home.

As of 2024, with 1.8 million Muslims officially counted, Islam is the second-largest declared religion in Canada after Christianity, with flourishing and diverse religious communities across the country.

Let's take a moment to reflect on the journeys, challenges, and achievements of our sisters and brothers who came before us and paved the way for a prosperous Muslim community in present-day Canada.

Backdrop: Canadian Muslims come from various regions, including South Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and sub-Saharan Africa. This diversity enriches our traditions, languages, dialects, and experiences, all of which contribute significantly to Canadian society.

But where did it all begin? Let's explore our history through key calendar years.

1851 (some accounts cite 1854, but this appears inaccurate): James and Agnes Love, a young Scottish couple who converted to Islam before migrating to Canada (specifically southern Ontario), were the first recorded Muslims in Canada. In the first official Canadian census of 1871, James and Agnes identified themselves and their family as "Mohammedans" (an older English term for Muslims), making them among the country's first 13 recorded Muslims.

1854-55 (the exact date is unspecified, but it was sometime in the mid-1850s): Mahommah Gardo Baquaqua was an enslaved West African who escaped from Brazil to New York in 1847. After enrolling at New York Central College, he gained attention for his mastery of Arabic. He arrived in Canada in 1854. His autobiographical account of life as an enslaved person was published in Detroit and is recognized as the only known document on the slave trade from that period.

1880: The first recorded group of Arab immigrants from present-day Syria and Lebanon began arriving in Canada, where they were quickly employed on the Canadian Pacific Railway.

1910: Bedouin Ferran—known popularly in Canada as Peter Baker, and also as Ahmad Ali Ferran—was a Lebanese-born Canadian trader, politician, and author. As Canada's first Muslim elected to public office, he played a pivotal role in the history of Islam in the Arctic and Subarctic regions. His published work, "Memoirs of an Arctic Arab: The Story of a Free-Trader in Northern Canada" (1976), remains a valuable reference for historians.

1930s: Early Muslim settlements began to emerge, primarily concentrated in Ontario and Alberta before eventually shifting toward Quebec.

1931 Census: Documented a small Muslim community of about 645 individuals.

1938: Under the leadership of Ms. Hilwi Jomha Hamdon, an immigrant from Lebanon, the first Canadian mosque, Al-Rashid Mosque, was constructed in Edmonton, at a time when there were approximately 700 Muslims in the country.

1952: McGill University inaugurated a new Islamic Studies program.

1955: Ontario's first mosque, the London Muslim Mosque, opened in London, formed by Muslim families who established the Canadian Muslim Benevolent Society.

1960s: Canada officially removed racial and national origin-based preferences in immigration in 1962 and 1967. Before this, immigration rules primarily favored newcomers from Great Britain, France, and other Western European countries while heavily restricting entry for people from non-European nations. This policy shift led to a significant increase in Muslim immigration to Canada.

1969: The Islamic Foundation of Toronto was established, making it one of the oldest Muslim organizations in Canada.

1973: Toronto's first mosque, the Bosnian Islamic Center, opened, founded by Muslim Croats from Bosnia and Albanians.

1980s: Thousands of Lebanese Muslims fleeing civil war arrived in Canada.

1982: The first Madrassah (Islamic school), Al Rashid Islamic Institute, opened in Cornwall, Ontario.

1990s: Muslims from Somalia came to Canada as a result of the Somali Civil War, along with Bosnian Muslims escaping the breakup of former Yugoslavia.

2000s: This decade saw a significant increase in immigration to Canada from majority-Muslim nations, leading to the establishment of more Muslim associations and groups to support newly settled community members.

2010: The Midnight Sun Mosque, the first mosque in the Canadian Arctic, officially opened in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.

In Conclusion: For over 160 years, Muslims have called Canada their home, dedicating their skills, lives, and ambitions to the land and its people. These communities now encompass more than 60 ethno-cultural groups and various Islamic denominations, each represented by organizations or community associations. Muslims continue to enrich Canadian society while embracing their faiths and multicultural backgrounds.
"A People Without the Knowledge of Their History, Origin, and Culture Are Like a Tree Without Roots." — Marcus Garvey.
a-people-without-the-knowledge-of-their-history-origin-and-culture-are-like-a-tree-without-roots-marcus-garvey
DUBAI, UAE (MNTV) — Air travel between the United Arab Emirates and Israel has faced major disruption after Flydubai suspended its Tel Aviv services following an extraordinary cockpit attack aboard a flight that was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.

The media reported on the disruption following the incident, while Flydubai confirmed separately that flights to and from Israel were temporarily suspended at the request of authorities as investigators sought to establish what happened aboard Flight FZ1073.

The Boeing 737 was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Sept. 30 when the co-pilot allegedly attacked and wounded the captain as the aircraft suddenly descended thousands of feet.

Reuters reported that the plane dropped more than 16,000 feet during the incident before the injured captain managed to open the cockpit door, enabling passengers to intervene.

Off-duty pilots aboard the aircraft subsequently helped bring the plane under control before it landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Flydubai said the suspension would remain under review while authorities investigated the incident and emphasized that passenger and crew safety remained its priority.

Emirates also suspended codeshare operations involving Flydubai's Tel Aviv services. killings of journalists and medical workers, displacement and thousands of individual incidents across Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Unlike the fragmented flow of footage on social media, where posts can disappear when accounts are deleted, suspended or restricted, Archive Genocide attempts to preserve material alongside dates, locations, descriptions and links to original sources.

Its searchable database allows researchers to trace individual incidents rather than relying solely on footage circulating without context.

The project also maintains records of 72,835 Palestinians it identifies by name as having been killed in Gaza, turning an immense casualty toll into a searchable record of individual lives rather than leaving the victims represented only by statistics.

The archive's operators say their purpose is to prevent evidence from vanishing as the war recedes from immediate public attention. Their stated principle — “We archive what others erase” — reflects an effort to preserve footage before original posts, accounts or other digital records disappear.

The project says its researchers submit evidence to the International Criminal Court, the Hind Rajab Foundation and lawyers working with South Africa in proceedings before the International Court of Justice.

Those claimed submissions have not been independently confirmed publicly by all of the institutions concerned and therefore remain claims by the archive's operators.

Archive Genocide has also taken unusual steps to make the collection difficult to erase. Its downloadable releases contain 146,636 media files, while its live database currently lists about 156,915 entries.

The website itself has been made open source, allowing others to create independent copies of the repository.

Two curated downloadable releases alone contain more than 1.6 terabytes of material.

The first includes 82,386 media files occupying 864.5 gigabytes, while the second contains another 64,250 files occupying 778 gigabytes, including 45,036 videos and 19,214 photographs.

Behind those collections are approximately 2.4 terabytes of raw source archives assembled from journalists, documentation channels, social media accounts and other sources.

Among the preserved material are archives associated with Palestinian journalists and news channels, including Anas Al Sharif, Quds News and dozens of other accounts whose reporting formed part of the visual record of the assault.

The project distributes the material through torrents and independent mirrors, a decentralized approach intended to ensure that destroying one website or removing one social-media account cannot eliminate the underlying evidence.

The archive has also published cryptographic signatures and checksums allowing downloaded releases to be checked against the versions issued by the project.

That technical verification, however, establishes whether downloaded files match the archive's released files; it does not by itself independently establish the circumstances depicted in every photograph or video.

Journalists, investigators and legal teams must still corroborate individual material through original-source tracing, geolocation, chronology, witness accounts and other evidence before drawing conclusions about a particular incident.

The distinction is significant because a repository containing more than 150,000 pieces of visual material cannot automatically be treated as more than 150,000 independently adjudicated cases.

The archive nevertheless preserves an enormous body of primary-source material that could otherwise be lost before investigators have an opportunity to examine it.

Its preservation effort comes amid extensive international scrutiny of Israel's conduct in Gaza and continuing proceedings over alleged violations of international law.

The International Court of Justice has not issued a final judgment on whether Israel has committed genocide in the case brought by South Africa.

For Palestinians whose communities have been devastated, however, the archive serves another function beyond potential legal evidence.

It preserves names, places, images and moments that might otherwise disappear alongside destroyed neighborhoods and the people who documented them.

Israel's assault has produced an extraordinary volume of digital evidence recorded by journalists, doctors, rescue workers and ordinary Palestinians, often on mobile phones amid bombardment and displacement.

Archive Genocide's attempt to preserve that material means the visual record can potentially survive even when the original account, device, website or person behind the camera does not.

The result is a repository whose scale makes the destruction in Gaza difficult to reduce to casualty figures alone: tens of thousands of individual files preserve scenes of ruined homes, wounded civilians, destroyed infrastructure and Palestinian families confronting the consequences of more than three years of Israeli military operations.

Archive Genocide warns visitors that much of its material contains graphic images of death and severe injuries, including children, and says the footage is preserved not for casual viewing but for journalism, research, historical documentation and potential legal accountability.

As debates over responsibility, accountability and the historical record continue, the archive represents an effort to ensure that one element cannot easily disappear: the underlying visual documentation itself.

GAZA CITY, Palestine (MNTV) - After undergoing lengthy medical treatment in Egypt, elderly Palestinian Mahmoud Fouad al-Dahshan returned to the Gaza Strip with hopes of walking again with a prosthetic limb to replace the foot he lost during Israel’s three-year genocide in the enclave.

But those hopes were dashed when Israeli soldiers took his prosthetic limb. Then, the Turkish Red Crescent gave him renewed hope of walking again.

Dahshan, 64, was injured in early November 2023 when an Israeli bombardment struck his family’s home in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood.

Speaking to Anadolu, he said Israeli soldiers gave him a choice while he was returning from Egypt in May: surrender his prosthetic limb or the wheelchair he relied on. He chose the wheelchair and returned to Gaza without his prosthesis.

“The Israeli army arbitrarily confiscated the prosthetic limb without giving any reason or explaining why it posed a threat to them,” he said.

Life-changing injuries

Dahshan’s injuries were so severe that doctors had to amputate his left foot. The lack of medical equipment and supplies, compounded by the Israeli blockade, prevented doctors from providing the treatment he needed.

He has since spent nearly three years living with the consequences. During that time, he traveled to Egypt for treatment, where he was fitted with a prosthetic limb to compensate, at least in part, for his amputated foot.

For Dahshan, the prosthetic was more than a medical device. It offered him a way to regain his mobility and reduce his dependence on others. But that hope disappeared when he was forced to leave the limb behind on his return to Gaza.

He said another prosthetic limb belonging to an injured woman traveling with him was also confiscated and never returned, “so she entered Gaza as she had left it.”

A new journey of hope

At the Prosthetics and Orthotics Center affiliated with Gaza Municipality, Dahshan has begun a new journey to regain what he lost, this time with support from the Turkish Red Crescent.

As technicians took measurements in preparation for making him a new prosthetic limb, Dahshan held on to a simple but deeply meaningful hope: to stand and walk again without a wheelchair and reclaim part of the independence he lost with his injuries.

“I came here hoping to have a new prosthetic limb fitted to replace the one the (Israeli) occupation took from me and to begin a new treatment journey to help me walk and move without needing a wheelchair,” he said.

Dahshan thanked the Turkish Red Crescent for supporting the project, which provides prosthetic limbs to the wounded and amputees in the Gaza Strip.

“I extend my deepest thanks to the brothers at the Turkish Red Crescent who contributed to supporting this project to help the wounded of the Gaza Strip, and I ask Allah to reward them with goodness,” he said.

Two-phase project

Saadi Dabour, director of the Turkish Red Crescent’s office in Gaza, told Anadolu that the project aims primarily to “help people who have lost limbs regain mobility and carry out their daily activities.”

Dabour said prosthetic limbs were fitted for 10 injured people during August and September, while a second phase covering another 10 cases is scheduled to begin the following month.

But fitting a prosthetic limb is only part of the challenge. Dabour said the project faces “severe shortages of the raw materials and essential components needed to manufacture prosthetic limbs in the Gaza Strip.”

He described the shortages as a “major obstacle” for thousands of amputees who need rehabilitation and prosthetic services at a time when demand for such care continues to grow.

To help meet some of these needs, the Prosthetics and Orthotics Center in Gaza partnered with the Turkish Red Crescent on a humanitarian project aimed at helping amputees regain mobility and return to their daily lives.

More than 6,000 amputations

The cases supported by the project represent only a small part of the wider crisis facing amputees in Gaza.

Husni Muhanna, director of public relations at the Prosthetics and Orthotics Center affiliated with Gaza Municipality, said the center has continued providing services to wounded people and amputees since the beginning of the war, despite the severe conditions in the Gaza Strip.

Muhanna told Anadolu that more than 6,000 amputations had been recorded in the Sehhaty system affiliated with the Palestinian Health Ministry and the International Committee of the Red Cross during the war.

The center also faces shortages of the raw materials needed to manufacture prosthetic limbs and provide its services amid restrictions on bringing supplies into Gaza, including plaster and other essential materials, he said.

“The challenges are significant because of the blockade and shortage of equipment, but the center’s staff continues working with tremendous efforts to reach as many wounded and amputees as possible,” Muhanna said.

He said the partnership will support around 20 amputees by providing them with suitable prosthetic limbs in two phases.

From the tent to the streets

At another part of the center, young Uday Abu Warda was undergoing physical therapy and walking exercises with a prosthetic limb fitted during the project’s first phase.

For Uday, the prosthetic limb is more than a means of movement; it “has become a dividing line between two stages of my life.”

He told Anadolu that his leg was amputated on Oct. 10, 2023 following an Israeli bombardment in the early days of the war, when Gaza lacked the equipment and medical capabilities needed to provide prosthetic services.

Abu Warda was unable to resume a normal life for some time before benefiting from the prosthetics project.

“Thanks to God and then to the efforts of the Turkish Red Crescent, which provided me with this prosthetic limb. I have returned to life, and here I am carrying out many aspects of my daily life,” he said.

“After I had the prosthetic limb fitted, I felt a great improvement in my work and activities ... Now I can go out and walk with my friends, after I had been confined to the tent all the time,” he added.

Since Oct. 8, 2023, Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians and injured over 175,000, while 90% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been destroyed.

Gas prices in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have fluctuated sharply throughout September 2026, largely due to the annual switch from summer-blend to winter-blend gasoline, along with shifting global market pressures.

If September felt like a roller coaster, October is showing signs of being just as volatile. On October 2 (today), gas prices rose by 6 to 7 cents in certain parts of the city.
