Mamdani adds 10,000 free childcare seats in New York
New York City will extend its free childcare program for 2-year-olds to 17 more school districts in 2027, a move the mayor says will save families about $25,000 a year
NEW YORK (MNTV) – New York City will add 10,000 free childcare seats for 2-year-olds in the fall of 2027, expanding a program that Mayor Zohran Mamdani says will ease costs for working families.
Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the expansion Monday, extending the city’s “2-K” program to 17 more school districts, including areas of the Bronx and Staten Island.
It builds on a rollout this fall that reached 2,000 children in five districts, and will bring the program to 22 of the city’s 32 districts.
City Council Speaker Julie Menin said about 375,000 parents, most of them women, had left work for lack of affordable childcare.
Mamdani said the program would save families roughly $25,000 a year.
