Iran reviewing US proposals for talks as indirect communications continue
Pakistan and Qatar continue mediating between Tehran and Washington as Iran insists its conditions must be respected in any negotiations
TEHRAN (AA) – Iran says it is reviewing US proposals for negotiations as indirect communications between Tehran and Washington continue through regional mediators.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Monday that Pakistan and Qatar remain involved in facilitating exchanges between the two countries.
He stressed that Iran’s preconditions must be respected before any negotiations can take place.
Baqaei also acknowledged Russia’s constructive role in Iran’s nuclear negotiations, citing Moscow’s involvement in the 2015 nuclear agreement.
However, he clarified that Pakistan and Qatar remain the primary mediators between Tehran and Washington.
Addressing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, Baqaei blamed US and Israeli attacks on Iran for the deteriorating security situation.
He rejected suggestions that Tehran was using developments in the strategic waterway as leverage in negotiations.
Baqaei warned that security would not return to the region under Washington’s current approach.
He also dismissed US claims that Iran had lost its negotiating leverage, arguing that developments in global energy markets contradicted those assertions.
Turning to tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement, Baqaei expressed concern over continued hostilities.
He said Iran was prepared to facilitate dialogue between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis to help achieve a peaceful settlement.
Baqaei emphasized that Tehran opposed continued conflict between Muslim countries and remained engaged in diplomatic consultations with regional governments.
