Trump calls losing LA and San Diego ‘small price to pay’
President's remark appearing to invite Iranian strike on two major US cities drew outrage and sharpened scrutiny of how he weighs civilian lives
GRAND ISLAND, Nebraska (MNTV) — U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to suggest that Iran should be allowed to “take out” Los Angeles and San Diego, calling the possible destruction of two of California’s largest cities a “very small price to pay” while defending the economic costs of the war.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Grand Island, Trump was discussing war-driven price rises when he argued Americans should accept economic pain for national and global security.
“It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe,” he said, before turning to the prospect of an Iranian attack on a U.S. city: “They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay.”
He said the war was “essentially almost over with,” while allowing that fighting could continue, and promised prices would soon fall “very sharply.”
The comments, confirmed by U.S. outlets including ABC’s Los Angeles station, drew a fierce response from California Governor Gavin Newsom.
“After sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald Trump is now saying our foreign enemies should ‘take out’ Los Angeles and San Diego. He is deranged and dangerous,” Newsom wrote on X.
The remark landed amid an escalating feud between Trump and California over the deployment of federal forces, and intensified questions about how his administration weighs civilian safety against the costs of war.
