Lebanese army enters Dibbine after Israeli exit
Military deployment follows Israeli withdrawal from southern town amid continued attacks, destruction and fragile US-backed ceasefire
MARJAYOUN, Lebanon (MNTV) — Lebanese army units deployed in the southern border town of Dibbine after Israeli forces withdrew from the area following days of military operations that included shelling, demolitions and extensive destruction, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency.
The deployment marks the latest effort by Lebanese authorities to reassert control over territory affected by months of Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon, where residents have endured repeated attacks despite ongoing ceasefire arrangements.
According to the agency, Lebanese troops entered Dibbine in the Marjayoun district shortly after Israeli soldiers pulled back from the town.
The move came after several days of heightened Israeli military activity in and around the area, including artillery bombardment and demolition operations that damaged property and infrastructure.
The deployment follows a new understanding reached Wednesday between Lebanon and Israel during a fourth round of US-mediated talks held in Washington.
Under the arrangement, both sides agreed to renew a fragile ceasefire and establish so-called “pilot zones” in which the Lebanese army would exercise exclusive authority, excluding all non-state armed groups.
The agreement comes amid growing criticism of Israel’s continued military operations in Lebanon, which have persisted despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 17 and was later extended through early July.
Since March 2, Israeli strikes across Lebanon have killed more than 3,500 people, according to figures cited during the negotiations, fueling accusations that Israel has repeatedly undermined ceasefire commitments while continuing military pressure on Lebanese territory.
Observers note that the latest deployment places greater responsibility on the Lebanese army to stabilize border areas that have witnessed extensive destruction and repeated violations in recent months.
Residents in southern Lebanon continue to face uncertainty as sporadic Israeli attacks and military incursions have persisted despite diplomatic efforts led by the United States to prevent a wider regional conflict.
