Hamilton mourns scholar Asad Mohsin, a bridge-builder who guided communities after Christchurch

HAMILTON, New Zealand (MNTV) – Tributes have poured in across New Zealand following the death of Emeritus Professor Asad Mohsin, a prominent Muslim community leader, academic, and recipient of the 2022 Hamilton Civic Award and the 2025 New Zealand Order of Merit.

Hamilton Mayor Tim Macindoe described Mohsin as an outstanding community leader who would be deeply missed.

“I will always remember his courageous and dignified leadership following the 2019 Christchurch mosque attack, and the compassion, wisdom and reassurance he offered, not only to our local Muslim community but to our entire city, at a time that was so traumatic for all New Zealanders,” he said.

Mohsin built a distinguished academic career at the University of Waikato as Professor of Tourism and Hospitality Management, where his work focused on halal tourism, service quality in the hospitality industry and broader tourism management research.

He mentored generations of students and colleagues, contributed to journals including the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and later served as Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Community Engagement — reflecting his belief that universities should play an active role in supporting the communities around them.

Beyond academia, Mohsin served as President of the Waikato Muslim Association and the Waikato Multicultural Council from 2014 to 2023.

Following the 2019 Christchurch mosque attack, he facilitated a $30,000 annual scholarship fund through an agreement between the University of Waikato and the Waikato Muslim Association, creating opportunities for four Muslim students each year.

Councillor Emma Pike, Chair of Community, said Mohsin had initiated the first Multicultural Day in Hamilton, now held annually.

“His legacy will live on in the many students he inspired, the communities he strengthened, and the values of understanding, compassion, and unity that he championed throughout his life.”
