39 Sudanese among 112 migrants rescued off Libya coast
UNHCR says women and children were among those stranded at sea for over 24 hours as global migrant deaths rise in 2025
KHARTOUM, Sudan (MNTV) – At least 39 Sudanese nationals were among 112 migrants rescued off the western coast of Libya after being stranded at sea for more than 24 hours, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Tuesday.
In a statement, UNHCR said the group included women and children and had been adrift in the Mediterranean before being brought to safety. Four Somali nationals were also among those rescued, along with other unidentified migrants.
Emergency medical teams were dispatched to assist the survivors. Some were treated for hypothermia, while others suffered minor burns caused by a fuel leak on the overcrowded vessel.
The rescue comes days after Libyan Red Crescent teams recovered bodies from a separate migrant boat that sank between Al-Tamimi and Umm al-Razm in eastern Libya.
New figures released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) show that at least 7,667 people died or went missing along global migration routes in 2025.
Libya remains a key transit point for Sudanese and other African migrants attempting to reach Europe by sea, as conflict and economic hardship continue to drive displacement across the region.
