US president: America ‘lost sovereignty’ with Mamdani’s win in New York City
US President Donald Trump claimed that the United States had “lost its sovereignty” following Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York City’s next mayor
MIAMI, United States (MNTV) – US President Donald Trump claimed that the United States had “lost its sovereignty” following Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York City’s next mayor, vowing to “take care of it” but offering no details on potential actions.
Speaking in Miami on the first anniversary of his 2024 election victory over then–Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump said the nation’s largest city would “turn communist” under Mamdani’s leadership and portrayed Florida as a safe haven for disillusioned New Yorkers.
“Miami will soon be the refuge for those fleeing communism in New York,” he declared, framing the country’s political divide as a choice “between communism and common sense,” and between an “economic nightmare” and an “economic miracle.”
Mamdani’s victory came despite months of attacks from conservative figures and business leaders who criticized his progressive policies and Muslim background.
In his election-night remarks, the mayor-elect responded directly to Trump, saying, “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.”
The outcome in New York, alongside Democratic victories in Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races, has signaled a potential shift in national momentum ahead of next year’s midterm elections. Democrats also secured a key win in California, where voters approved a ballot measure to redraw electoral districts—seen as a pushback against gerrymandering efforts supported by Trump allies in other states.
Trump dismissed responsibility for Republican setbacks, posting on Truth Social that “pollsters” had blamed the losses on a government shutdown and his absence from the ballot. “We rescued our economy, regained our liberty, and together we saved our country on that magnificent night 365 days ago,” he told supporters in Miami.
