UN’s value must be proven by action, says Australian PM Albanese
Australian Prime Minister told the 80th session of the UN General Assembly that the United Nations’ worth will be judged by its actions
NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) – Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the 80th session of the UN General Assembly that the United Nations’ worth will be judged by its actions, not its age.
“The true value of the United Nations is not counted in decades, it is measured in deeds,” he said, citing the UN Charter’s mission to protect future generations from war and to advance human rights and social progress.
Albanese reiterated his call for a cease-fire in Gaza and the return of hostages, urging member states to ensure the UN’s principles are applied to the Middle East.
“When can those words hold meaning, if not now? Where can those words apply, if they do not apply to the Middle East?” he asked.
The prime minister praised peacekeepers and aid workers who have risked and lost their lives in pursuit of UN ideals. “There is a moment of opportunity here — let us seize it,” he said.
Albanese also emphasized Australia’s leadership in the Pacific and commitment to tackling climate change, highlighting the country’s efforts to turn renewable energy into economic opportunity.
Calling for trust “in each other’s humanity,” he concluded: “More than ever, we must choose to succeed together rather than risk failing alone.”
