Turkmen wrestlers win five medals at Asian Junior Championship
Freestyle wrestlers from Turkmenistan claim one silver and four bronze medals in U15 and U20 categories, showcasing regional strength
ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan (MNTV) — Turkmenistan’s young freestyle wrestlers earned five medals—one silver and four bronze—at the recently concluded Asian Wrestling Championship for cadets (U15) and juniors (U20) held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The event brought together athletes from 15 countries across Asia.
The standout performer for Turkmenistan was 19-year-old Dovletgeldi Myradov, a first-year student at the Turkmen State Institute of Architecture and Construction. Competing in the U20 men’s 86 kg weight category, Myradov claimed silver after a strong showing.
He dominated his opening bout against South Korea’s Juhwan Lee with a technical win of 13:0, followed by a semifinal victory over India’s cadet champion Sachin at 12:1.
In the final, Myradov put up a determined fight but lost 2:6 to Iran’s Abolfazl Yaser Rahmani Firouzjai, the reigning adult Asian champion. This marks an improvement for Myradov, who had won bronze at the U17 Asian Championships two years ago.
Another bronze came through Vatan Annaorazov, also 19 and a student at the same institute. He competed in the 74 kg category, defeating Mongolia’s Burendjargal Batbayar 12:2 and Tajikistan’s Muhammadamin Abduloyev 13:4.
Although he fell in the semifinal to Uzbekistan’s Umarhon Muydinov, he rebounded in the bronze medal match with a narrow 5:4 win over China’s Jinpeng Zhu.
In the 79 kg weight class, 18-year-old Alp Arslan Begenjov, an international master of sports from Ashgabat, added a third bronze.
Despite leading India’s Amit 6:3 in the quarterfinals, Begenjov was pinned and lost the match. He later secured bronze by defeating Uzbekistan’s Jorullo Abdufattohov 12:1. Begenjov had previously won silver at the U23 Asian Championship in Vietnam last month.
Two additional bronze medals came in the cadet (U15) category. Meret Durdyev, a 9th-grade student from Ashgabat Secondary School No. 9, earned bronze in the 44 kg division.
In Greco-Roman wrestling, Jeyhun Hakberdiyev from the capital’s “Olimp” sports school won bronze in the 52 kg category.
The championship featured wrestlers from countries including Iran, India, Japan, Uzbekistan, China, Turkiye, and host nation Kyrgyzstan. Turkmenistan’s performance highlighted the growing depth and potential of its youth wrestling program on the continental stage.
