Türkiye’s free trade zones set historic record in exports, trade surplus
Exports hit $1.045 billion in August with strong gains in high-tech production
ISTANBUL, Türkiye (MNTV) — Türkiye’s free trade zones achieved their highest-ever monthly export and trade surplus figures in August, the Ministry of Trade announced, underscoring their growing role in the country’s economy.
Exports from the zones reached $1.045 billion last month, a 9.4% increase from $955 million in August 2024.
The trade surplus also surged to a record $448 million, up 22% from $367 million a year earlier. The ministry described these figures as the strongest August performance in the history of Türkiye’s free zones.
Total trade volume, covering both domestic and international transactions, amounted to $2.18 billion in August. Over the January–August period, exports rose 4.1% year-on-year to $8.3 billion, surpassing the previous record of $7.9 billion.
The trade surplus for the same period edged up to $2.91 billion from $2.86 billion, with exports accounting for 75.8% of total sales.
Technology-driven production remained a cornerstone of growth, with medium-to-high and high-tech goods representing 56.1% of exports during the first eight months of 2025. The ministry highlighted this trend as a key factor in supporting the national economy.
Among individual zones, the Aegean Free Zone recorded the highest trade activity, with total volume reaching $3.98 billion between January and August.
Its exports in August climbed 20% to $275 million, representing more than a quarter of total free zone exports. Over the first eight months, its exports expanded 12.4% to $2.11 billion.
The Antalya Free Zone posted the sharpest monthly growth, with exports soaring 168.5% to $130.1 million in August.
Other strong performers included the Adana Yumurtalık Free Zone, which increased exports 28.7% to $298.4 million, and the Kocaeli Free Zone, which rose 20.1% to $516 million in the same period.
The ministry emphasized that the robust performance of technology-intensive industries across Türkiye’s free zones reflects their strategic importance in bolstering exports and driving economic growth.
