Trump vows to step up pressure on Russia with NATO allies
US President Donald Trump said Thursday that the United States and its NATO allies are intensifying coordinated pressure on Russia
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) – US President Donald Trump said that the United States and its NATO allies are intensifying coordinated pressure on Russia to reach a peace deal in Ukraine, while also boosting joint defense initiatives within the alliance.
Speaking at the Oval Office alongside Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Trump said NATO unity remains central to Washington’s strategy. “We are stepping up the pressure. We’re stepping it up together. We’re all stepping it up. NATO has been great,” he said.
Trump highlighted a surge in American arms sales to NATO members, remarking, “We’re selling a lot of weapons to NATO, and that’s going, I guess, to Ukraine for the most part.” He added that US defense industries “make the greatest weapons in the world,” underscoring what he called the economic and strategic benefits of American production.
The two leaders also announced a bilateral deal to jointly build 11 icebreaker ships—seven of which will be constructed in the United States, with Finnish expertise contributing to their design.
“They sort of have almost a monopoly on icebreakers. Nobody makes them like Finland,” Trump said, describing the partnership as “a very good deal” that will deepen cooperation between the two countries. The first vessel is expected to be delivered by 2028.
While praising NATO’s overall performance, Trump criticized Spain for failing to meet the defense spending targets he has urged members to adopt. “Spain is the one that didn’t do it,” he said. “Maybe you should throw them out of NATO, frankly.”
Trump contrasted Spain’s shortfall with what he described as “strong commitment” from other alliance members who have increased their military budgets, insisting that greater spending discipline is essential for NATO’s strength and credibility.
