Trump: Venezuelan president has two options, ‘easy way or hard way’
The exchange occurs amid the largest U.S. military buildup in Latin America since 1989, with forces positioned near Venezuela
CARACAS, Venezuela (MNTV) – U.S. President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, presenting two options to resolve escalating tensions: the “easy way” or the “hard way.”
Maduro responded theatrically at a ceremony at Fuerte Tiuna Military Academy in Caracas, appearing in military uniform and brandishing Simon Bolivar’s sword, pledging to defend Venezuela’s sovereignty.
Trump outlined his position: “If we can save some lives; if we can handle things the easy way, that would be great. If we have to handle things the hard way, that’s okay too.”
The exchange occurs amid the largest U.S. military buildup in Latin America since 1989, with forces positioned near Venezuela.
The Pentagon has reactivated the Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Puerto Rico and strengthened deployments in Honduras and Cuba.
The USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier with a 4,000-member crew, has been deployed to the Caribbean and Pacific, marking the most significant U.S. military presence in the region in over three decades.
Maduro framed the standoff as a patriotic struggle, stating: “The homeland demands the greatest effort and sacrifice. If the homeland calls, we will sacrifice our lives if necessary.”
The escalation has raised concerns across Latin America and among international observers about the risk of armed conflict, while highlighting the broader geopolitical implications of U.S.-Venezuela tensions.
