Trump says meeting with Muslim nations on Gaza was ‘very successful’
“We had a very good meeting concerning Gaza,” Trump told reporters as he left the event. “It was a very successful meeting with all of the big players, except for Israel, but that’s going to be next, and I think we can work something out on Gaza, but it was a very good meeting with great leaders.”
No further information on the outcome of the closed-door meeting was provided by officials.
The White House previously said that Türkiye, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan would be represented at the leader-level meeting, but did not offer additional details.
Al Jazeera quoted Turkiye’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying that he was “pleased” with the results of a “fruitful” meeting between Trump and Arab and Muslim leaders on ending Israel’s war on Gaza.
Trump wants Arab and Muslim countries to agree to send military forces to Gaza to enable Israel’s withdrawal and to secure funding for transition and rebuilding programmes, according to US-based media outlet Axios. The plan sees no role for Hamas, which won the 2006 election in the enclave.
The Emirati state news agency WAM said on Wednesday that the meeting had been focused on ending Israel’s war on Gaza and reaching a permanent ceasefire, adding that addressing the worsening humanitarian crisis was discussed as a priority.
According to The Times of Israel, Trump repeatedly called it his “most important meeting”, saying “we’re going to end something that should have probably never started.”
