Saudi Arabia showcases traditional arts on Makkah-Madinah route
Billboard project along Hijrah Road blends cultural heritage with modern design as part of Year of Handicrafts 2025 initiative
MAKKAH, Saudi Arabia (MNTV) – A new series of billboards celebrating Saudi Arabia’s traditional arts and crafts has been unveiled along the historic Hijrah Road linking Makkah and Madinah, aiming to enrich the cultural experience of pilgrims and tourists traveling across the Kingdom.
The project, recently completed by the Roads General Authority in collaboration with the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (Wrth), comes as part of the Year of Handicrafts 2025 initiative.
The installations showcase contemporary interpretations of traditional designs, including motifs inspired by regional weaving and crafts, reflecting the Kingdom’s diverse artistic heritage.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, the artwork on the billboards highlights unique regional styles, contributing to the promotion of heritage tourism and strengthening national identity.
The Hijrah Road, a vital route for pilgrims and visitors to the holy sites, benefits from Saudi Arabia’s extensive and interconnected road network — among the largest globally — which plays a crucial role in facilitating safe and comfortable travel throughout the country.
To further support pilgrims, the Roads General Authority has also launched a round-the-clock “mobile sites” service along the route during the Hajj season.
Each mobile unit accommodates up to 40 pilgrims and provides essential amenities, including air conditioning, shaded rest areas, restrooms, meals, and cold beverages, in the event of bus breakdowns or delays.
The initiative underscores Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to enhance the spiritual and cultural journey of pilgrims while preserving and showcasing its rich artistic traditions.
