Russian region offers 1-million-ruble bonus for first-time mothers
Women in Russia’s Trans-Baikal Territory who give birth to their first child may soon receive a one-time payment of 1 million rubles
MOSCOW (MNTV) — Women in Russia’s Trans-Baikal Territory who give birth to their first child may soon receive a one-time payment of 1 million rubles under a new regional initiative.
The Ministry of Social Protection has drafted a bill proposing the benefit for women aged 18 to 25 who give birth after Dec. 31, 2025. To qualify, recipients must live in the region and either study or work in state institutions, Chita Online reported, citing the Legislative Assembly’s press service.
Deputy Minister of Social Protection Tatyana Sarayeva said the ministry initially recommended a 100,000-ruble payment, fearing the regional Finance Ministry would not approve a higher amount.
But Alexander Mikhailovich, an official involved in the proposal, pushed to increase the benefit to 1.5 million or even 1.6 million rubles before settling on 1 million.
Regional lawmakers are expected to consider the bill before the end of the year. If adopted, the law would take effect in January 2026.
The proposal comes as Russia’s Social Fund moves to raise the maximum maternity benefit nationwide.
