Russia offers mediation as India-Pakistan tensions over Kashmir escalate
Russia offers to mediate escalating India-Pakistan tensions, citing mutual dialogue as key to resolving fallout from the Kashmir attack
MOSCOW (MNTV) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has offered Russia’s assistance in mediating rising tensions between Pakistan and India following a deadly attack in the disputed Kashmir region.
Lavrov conveyed this during a conversation with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday, according to a statement from Russia’s Foreign Ministry.
The ministry noted that the discussions focused on the “significant escalation of tensions” between New Delhi and Islamabad.
Lavrov emphasized Russia’s willingness to facilitate a political resolution to the crisis stemming from the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which left 26 people dead.
The offer hinges on mutual interest from both countries in pursuing a peaceful settlement.
This outreach follows Lavrov’s earlier talks with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, during which Russia reiterated its call for dialogue and a resolution to the conflict.
The April 22 attack by unknown gunmen targeted a mountain tourist destination in Pahalgam and marked one of the deadliest incidents in the region in recent years.
The victims included both a local and Indian tourists, further intensifying strained relations between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
Muslim-majority Kashmir has long been a flashpoint between India and Pakistan, who claim the territory in full but govern separate parts.
The region has been the site of several wars, a decades-long insurgency, and ongoing diplomatic hostilities.
Russia, a longstanding ally and major arms supplier to India, has maintained close ties with New Delhi since the Soviet era.
Despite this, Moscow has also developed stronger ties with Islamabad in recent years, signaling its intention to play a balancing role in South Asia.
Lavrov’s proposal highlights Russia’s broader diplomatic approach, seeking to position itself as a mediator in global conflicts.
The Russian Foreign Ministry, in a Telegram statement, emphasized its readiness to assist “if both Islamabad and New Delhi express a desire for dialogue.”
The situation remains tense, with both countries engaging in tit-for-tat measures, including restrictions on trade, airspace closures, and heated rhetoric.
The international community, including Russia, continues to urge restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation.
