RSS leader among 30 detained for communal violence in India
Police say situation under control after clashes, arson and stone-pelting during religious procession in West Bengal district
MURSHIDABAD, India (MNTV) — Police in India’s eastern West Bengal state have detained around 30 people, including a local leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), following violent clashes between Hindu groups and Muslim residents during a Ram Navami procession in Murshidabad district, authorities said.
The violence broke out after tensions escalated during the religious procession, leading to stone-pelting, vandalism and reports of arson in some areas. Security forces were deployed to control the situation, and police said the situation is now under control.
According to local authorities, the clashes occurred when the procession passed through a sensitive area, after which confrontations erupted between groups. Several shops were damaged during the unrest, and additional police forces have been stationed in the area to prevent further violence.
Officials said an investigation is underway and more arrests may be made as authorities review video footage and identify those involved in the clashes.
Communal tensions occasionally flare up during religious processions in parts of India, particularly during festivals such as Ram Navami, which in recent years have seen increased security deployments in sensitive areas.
Police said patrols will continue in Murshidabad and nearby areas to maintain law and order.
