Palestinian premier says government ready to take responsibility in Gaza
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa said Tuesday his government is prepared to assume full responsibilities in the Gaza Strip
RAMALLAH, Palestine (AA) — Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa said Tuesday his government is prepared to assume full responsibilities in the Gaza Strip, including relief, reconstruction, and long-term reforms, while working to unify institutions with the West Bank.
Mustafa’s remarks came during a Cabinet meeting in Ramallah, a day after US President Donald Trump unveiled a 20-point plan to end the Gaza war.
The premier emphasized readiness “to assume national responsibilities, whether in immediate relief or recovery and reconstruction efforts in Gaza, or in continuing the comprehensive national reforms that have been underway.”
On Monday, the Palestinian Authority cautiously welcomed Trump’s plan, pledging to cooperate with the US, regional partners, and the international community toward “a comprehensive agreement” to end the war.
Trump’s proposal, announced with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calls for the release of Israeli captives within 72 hours, a ceasefire, Hamas disarmament, and the establishment of an international supervisory body — chaired by Trump — to oversee Gaza’s administration.
Under the plan, a Gaza International Transitional Authority (GITA) would appoint commissioners and manage daily governance through an executive secretariat, excluding both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. At its base would be a Palestinian Executive Authority, a new body distinct from the PA.
Mustafa reaffirmed efforts to unify institutions and laws across Gaza and the West Bank, stressing the importance of building on the New York Declaration, adopted in September at a Saudi-French co-chaired conference on implementing the two-state solution.
He said international recognition of Palestine, combined with recent peace initiatives, must be used to prevent displacement and annexation, strengthen the Palestinian National Authority, and secure an independent state.
