Pakistan conducts first-ever corneal transplant, restoring sight to two soldiers
Pakistan has achieved a major medical milestone with the country’s first successful corneal transplant
RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (MNTV) – Pakistan has achieved a major medical milestone with the country’s first successful corneal transplant, restoring sight to two soldiers who lost their vision during counter-terrorism operations.
According to Geo News, the surgery was performed at the Armed Forces Institute of Ophthalmology (AFIO) in Rawalpindi using corneas donated by the late Wasima Askari, wife of Major General (Retd) Syed Zafar Mehdi Askari, who passed away on October 3, 2025.
Specialist military surgeons carried out the procedures on 30-year-old soldier Aliullah and 26-year-old soldier Falak Sher, both of whom were blinded in anti-terror operations. The transplants were completed successfully, allowing both men to regain their sight.
The operation is being hailed as a landmark achievement for Pakistan’s medical community and a powerful example of the impact of organ donation. It also symbolizes a bridge between civilian compassion and the sacrifices of the armed forces.
Expressing pride in her mother’s legacy, donor’s daughter Zehra Mehdi said, “The greatest honour is that my mother’s eyes were donated to two brave soldiers, bringing light back into their lives. This act is a source of eternal charity (sadaqah-e-jariyah).”
Medical experts described the transplant as a historic step for AFIO, a leading institution in treating and rehabilitating soldiers injured in service.
Despite the success, doctors warn that Pakistan continues to face a severe shortage of organ donors, largely due to social taboos and cultural misconceptions. Health professionals estimate that 10 to 15 people in the country die every day because suitable organs are unavailable.
Specialists are calling for stronger public awareness campaigns and legal reforms to promote both living and posthumous donations. Some experts have also pointed to xenotransplantation — animal-to-human transplants — as a potential future solution to Pakistan’s growing organ crisis.
The successful corneal transplant not only restored the vision of two soldiers but also shed light on the potential for a more compassionate and medically advanced Pakistan.
