Oman unveils smart farming project using plant-factory tech
New initiative targets year-round crop output, reduced water use and stronger national food security through controlled-environment agriculture
MUSCAT, Oman (MNTV) – Oman has launched a Smart Vegetable Farms project backed by Oman India Fertiliser Company, introducing advanced plant-factory systems designed to transform domestic agriculture through fully controlled indoor environments.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources said the project uses industrial-scale closed ecosystems that regulate humidity, carbon dioxide, temperature and artificial lighting to produce leafy vegetables throughout the year, ensuring uniform, pesticide-free harvests.
Officials said the initiative aims to attract farmers, youth and entrepreneurs to adopt modern agri-tech solutions that offer strong investment potential and support nationwide innovation in food production.
An Indoor Vertical Farming Project has also been rolled out under the initiative, enabling high-density cultivation with sharply reduced water use and significantly improved land-use efficiency.
The ministry noted that continuous output and consistent product quality are among the system’s key advantages.
Authorities added that the broader goals include strengthening food security, promoting self-sufficiency, and expanding the adoption of smart agricultural systems across Oman’s governorates.
The initiative forms part of the country’s long-term strategy to modernize farming practices and accelerate the integration of sustainable, technology-driven production methods.
