Maldives secures world’s top destination title for sixth year
Island nation named World’s Leading Destination and World’s Leading Green Destination at World Travel Awards as arrivals surge past two million ahead of target
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — The Maldives has cemented its status as a premier global tourism hub, winning the title of World’s Leading Destination for the sixth consecutive year and World’s Leading Green Destination for the second time at the World Travel Awards held in Bahrain.
The recognition places the island nation among the most decorated destinations in global tourism history. Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards are widely regarded as the travel industry’s highest honors, celebrating excellence in hospitality, sustainability, and destination branding.
The Maldives’ six-year consecutive win matches Dubai’s overall record but makes it the only destination to achieve six back-to-back victories, setting a new benchmark in the sector. Previous wins came in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, while Dubai’s six titles were spread across 2002, 2003, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016.
The milestone coincides with a surge in tourism. Visitor arrivals exceeded two million earlier than ever, keeping the Maldives on track to reach 2.3 million arrivals in 2025.
Tourism authorities credit the momentum to global marketing campaigns and strengthened partnerships that expanded visibility across key markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
The Maldives has also diversified its offerings beyond luxury leisure travel, gaining recognition for MICE tourism (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions), incentive travel initiatives in Malé, and innovative digital engagement strategies.
Visit Maldives Corporation said the awards reflect the combined efforts of industry stakeholders, government agencies, and local communities, emphasizing sustainability and year-round promotion as central to the country’s strategy.
Environmental protection — from marine conservation to renewable energy — remains a priority to maintain the Maldives’ identity as a premium eco-travel destination amid climate vulnerability.
