Weather Alert: Cold Week Ahead in the GTA
Toronto is set to experience a significant weather shift this week, as snow moves in from the north. According to The Weather Network, a system is expected to hit Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) on Wednesday, December 10, potentially complicating morning commutes with wet snow on roads and highways.
The northern parts of the GTA and eastern Ontario are expected to receive the heaviest snowfall from this system. The Weather Network explains that a surge of Arctic air will bring some of the coldest temperatures the region has experienced in nearly nine months. As of today, daytime highs have already dropped to -6 degrees Celsius in Toronto, marking the lowest high since January and February.
Tomorrow’s (Monday) temperatures are expected to be around 10 degrees Celsius below seasonal averages, signalling that our frigid cold spell will likely persist for a while. Tonight’s temperature will dip to -10 degrees Celsius, but it will feel closer to -16 degrees Celsius due to wind chill. On Tuesday, we may see scattered flurries. Although the daytime high will be a more tolerable -1 degree Celsius, the wind chill will make it feel like -7 degrees Celsius.
By mid-week, temperatures may rise slightly before another drop over the weekend and into early next week. On Saturday, the forecast predicts a high of -3 degrees Celsius, but it will feel like -7 degrees Celsius due to wind chill. Sunday will be similarly cold, with a high of -5 degrees Celsius and a wind chill making it feel like -13 degrees Celsius.
The coldest part of the forecast is expected next Monday morning, when temperatures could plunge to -13 degrees Celsius, with a wind chill of -18 degrees Celsius. From December 16 to 21, southern Ontario is likely to see more snow showers and frigid temperatures, followed by a transition to milder weather during the holiday break.
Residents of Toronto are advised to bundle up and ensure that children remain indoors unless necessary.
