Maldives nominated for world’s top travel and sustainability awards
The island nation is competing for World’s Leading Destination and Green Destination titles at the 2025 World Travel Awards
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — The Maldives has been nominated for two of the highest honors in global tourism at the 2025 World Travel Awards (WTA): World’s Leading Destination and World’s Leading Green Destination.
The nominations place the Indian Ocean nation among the frontrunners in international travel recognition, highlighting its enduring appeal to global tourists and its growing focus on sustainability.
The Maldives has maintained a remarkable record at the World Travel Awards, winning the World’s Leading Destination title for five consecutive years. The upcoming edition will test whether the island nation can continue its winning streak while also establishing itself as a model for responsible tourism.
Officials from Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) said the recognition reflects years of coordinated efforts across the country’s tourism sector — from luxury resorts and local guesthouses to liveaboards and community-led eco projects.
They said the new nomination in the “green destination” category underscores how environmental stewardship has become central to the Maldives’ tourism strategy.
The World Travel Awards, launched in 1993, are regarded as a global benchmark for excellence across the travel and hospitality industries. The awards celebrate achievements across airlines, hotels, destinations, and national tourism boards worldwide.
Voting for the 2025 awards began on October 6 and will continue until October 26, allowing both travel professionals and the public to participate online. Winners will be announced later this year.
Tourism remains the cornerstone of the Maldivian economy, contributing more than one-quarter of the country’s GDP and employing a significant portion of its workforce.
The nation’s ability to blend luxury hospitality with environmental responsibility has become key to its international reputation — and could once again help it claim both titles at this year’s awards.
