Maldives launches new job training programs for people with disabilities
Initiatives aim to improve workplace skills, expand qualifications, and boost employment opportunities across the island nation
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — New training initiatives are being introduced in the Maldives to help people with disabilities gain formal qualifications, improve workplace readiness, and strengthen financial independence.
One of the flagship efforts is a Job Readiness Programme launched in partnership with the Care Society. The program focuses on administrative and office-related skills, while also offering internship opportunities for participants who may not yet be ready to enter the workforce.
Fathimath Sham’aa Shafeeq, a social protection officer involved in the initiative, explained that one of the biggest barriers to employment for people with disabilities is the lack of certified training. “These programs are designed to bridge that gap by equipping individuals with practical skills and recognized qualifications,” she said.
Alongside the Job Readiness Programme, additional courses are being developed with Maldives Polytechnic in five fields. Most of these will be Certificate Level 3 programs lasting four to six months, though shorter one- to two-month options are also planned.
Authorities are also building a National Disability Registry to collect information on community needs and track long-term changes in people’s lives. Advocates say the registry could help ensure that assistance is better targeted and resources are delivered more effectively.
Financial support remains an important element of disability inclusion. The Maldives has provided a monthly allowance to people with disabilities since 2011, with the stipend raised in 2023 to $195 per month.
While activists welcome the allowance, they argue that sustainable employment opportunities and skills training are essential to ensure long-term independence.
