Kazakhstan unveils sculpture honoring viral human chain rescue
Art installation commemorates 2016 act of solidarity that saved man and dog
ALMATY, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — An art installation commemorating a dramatic river rescue that captured global attention a decade ago has been unveiled in Almaty, honoring an act of collective courage and compassion.
The sculpture, installed along the Ulken River near the Sairan Reservoir, marks the site where in 2016 residents formed a human chain to save a man and his dog trapped in the water.
The incident occurred when the dog fell into the river and was unable to climb out due to steep banks. Its owner descended to help but also became stranded, prompting bystanders to join hands and pull both to safety.
A video of the rescue went viral, drawing millions of views online and coverage from international media.
The installation depicts a chain of figures linked together, symbolizing unity and mutual assistance. The final figure’s outstretched hand extends beyond a barrier, allowing visitors to physically engage with the artwork and symbolically join the rescue.
City officials said the project was funded through private donations, while the identities of those involved in the original rescue remain unknown.
The sculpture was created by Yerbosyn Meldibekov, whose works are held in international museum collections.
Officials said the concept reflects values of solidarity and collective action, inspired by an event that resonated widely with the public.
The installation also echoes previous artistic tributes in Kazakhstan to acts of bravery involving animals, including murals honoring Yerlan Nurgaliyev, who was killed by poachers in 2019 and later awarded a state honor posthumously.
