Jordan plans restoration of heritage sites to boost tourism
Royal directives guide rehabilitation of castle, historic streets, shrine, and surrounding city infrastructure in Karak
KARAK, Jordan (MNTV) – Jordanian authorities have unveiled a detailed plan to preserve Karak Castle, rehabilitate heritage buildings, and revitalize the old city streets, following directives from King Abdullah II.
The Higher Committee, responsible for implementing the initiative, convened at the Royal Court with chief of the Royal Court Yousef Hassan Al-Issawi, Minister of Local Administration Eng. Walid Al-Masri, and other key members to review the executive plan.
According to Jordan News, the committee was formed to follow up on royal instructions issued during the King’s visit to Karak Governorate.
The plan includes the restoration, maintenance, and development of Karak Castle and its surrounding buildings, the establishment of a handicrafts center, and the rehabilitation of the Shrine of Al-Khidr.
The committee is also overseeing documentation and inventory of heritage houses, upgrading city infrastructure, and improving transportation systems within Karak.
Officials reviewed ongoing projects such as the Baraka/Karak Gate tourism development, Wadi Ibn Hammad enhancement, and tourism initiatives in Wadi Mujib.
City improvements include road paving, sidewalk and curbstone maintenance, and the launch of pilot bus operations for residents and visitors.
The report also highlighted the progress of the cable car project, the operation of the new Karak complex, and the demolition of old structures near the castle square, including the former tourism office and Awqaf/Sharia School building.
Additionally, the relocation of the security center and tourism police to the city center and the completion of Mujib Road lighting were addressed.
