Israeli forces raid Birzeit University, firing at students, injuring 11
Campus incursion north of Ramallah leaves 11 wounded and senior academic detained
WEST BANK, Palestine (MNTV) — Israeli forces illegally raided Birzeit University north of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, injuring 11 students and detaining a senior university official, according to Palestinian sources.
The university said five students were wounded by live ammunition, while dozens suffered breathing difficulties after exposure to tear gas. All injured students were transferred to hospital by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.
Birzeit University public relations officer Nirdin Al-Mimi said soldiers used live fire, tear gas canisters and stun grenades during the raid on the campus.
She added that forces broke through the university’s main gate, damaged facilities, stormed multiple buildings and seized equipment belonging to the student movement.
Wafa news agency reported that troops also detained Assem Khalil, the university’s vice president for academic affairs.
Birzeit University, one of Palestine’s leading higher education institutions, enrolls nearly 8,000 students.
The Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Education condemned the illegal raid, saying it violated international norms protecting educational institutions.
The ministry urged international and regional academic organizations to expose and address ongoing violations targeting Palestinian higher education.
