Israeli airstrikes kill six in Yemen’s capital Sanaa after Houthi attacks
Escalation follows Yemeni group’s missile launch toward Israel; Houthis vow continued support for Gaza despite losses
TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — Israeli airstrikes on Yemen’s capital Sanaa killed at least six people and wounded 86 others, marking a major escalation in regional hostilities linked to the ongoing war on Gaza.
According to Al Masirah TV, the strikes targeted an oil facility and a power plant, while Israel claimed it had also bombed a presidential palace compound described as part of a “military complex.”
Two days earlier, the Yemeni group announced it had fired a missile at Israel in an effort to pressure Tel Aviv to halt its offensive and blockade on Gaza.
The Israeli military said the strikes came in response to repeated Houthi attacks, including missile and drone launches toward Israeli territory.
Footage verified by Al Jazeera showed large fireballs and plumes of smoke rising over Sanaa.
A Houthi military official claimed the group’s air defenses had “neutralized most of the Israeli aircraft” and forced them to retreat.
Despite the casualties, the Houthis insisted the strikes would not deter their operations.
“The Israeli aggression against Yemen will not discourage us from continuing our support for Gaza, no matter the sacrifices,” senior Houthi official Mohammed al-Bukhaiti said.
Abed al-Thawr, an official in the Houthi Defence Ministry, accused Israel of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, calling claims of hitting military sites “lies.”
He described the attack as “barbarism” and said the presidential palace struck had long been abandoned.
The Houthi-led Government of Change and Reconstruction in Sanaa labeled the assault a “war crime” and said Israel, with U.S. backing, is waging “an open war against the Arab and Muslim nation.”
Hamas also condemned the Israeli strikes on Yemen, calling them a “blatant violation of Arab sovereignty and international law.”
The Palestinian group praised the Houthis’ stance as “courageous” and urged Arab and Muslim nations to unite against Israel’s occupation.
The attack is part of a wider Israeli campaign against Yemeni infrastructure, including repeated bombings of power stations and ports in recent weeks.
