Israel interrogates leader of Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque
JERUSALEM (AA) – The Israeli intelligence service summoned the Imam (prayer leader) of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem on Monday for interrogation.
A family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Israeli forces raided Sheikh Ekrema Sabri’s home in al-Suwaneh neighborhood in East Jerusalem.
“He was summoned for questioning without specifying the reasons,” the relative shared.
There was no comment from the Israeli authorities.
Sabri has been critical of the decades-long Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and has been arrested several times by Israeli forces in the past.
He previously held the position of the Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories from 1994 to 2006.
The Al-Aqsa Mosque represents the world’s third holiest site for Muslims, being the place where the Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him ascended to the heavens and led a prayer congregation of all the prophets of God. It also served as the First Qiblah (prayer direction) in Islamic history. On the other hand, Jews refer to the area as the “Temple Mount”, claiming it had been the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. It illegally annexed the entire city in 1980 in a move never recognized by the international community.
