Iraq rejects role in conflict after US embassy alarm
Baghdad distances itself from regional war as Washington issues alarm over possible attacks and urges citizens to leave
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Iraq has declared it is not a party to the widening regional conflict, pushing back against escalating tensions after the US Embassy in Baghdad issued a security warning over potential attacks in the capital.
In an official statement, Iraq’s Foreign Ministry said the government remains firmly committed to keeping the country out of the conflict, despite facing significant security, economic and political fallout from a war widely driven by United States and Israeli military actions across the region.
The ministry warned that certain actors may attempt to exploit the volatile situation by carrying out unauthorized operations that do not reflect state policy, stressing that such actions are illegal and cannot be attributed to the Iraqi government.
Officials emphasized that Baghdad has consistently rejected any activities that risk dragging the country deeper into regional instability.
Authorities also pointed to what they described as a broader breakdown in adherence to international law and humanitarian norms, warning that the ongoing conflict is turning into an open-ended war with expanding consequences even for countries not directly involved.
Despite operating under a caretaker government, Iraqi officials said they are taking extensive measures to contain the spillover, strengthen internal security, protect diplomatic missions and safeguard civilians.
The government reiterated that Iraqi territory will not be used as a launch point for hostile actions.
The statement came after the US Embassy warned that Iran-aligned militia groups could launch attacks in central Baghdad within 24 to 48 hours, potentially targeting American personnel, diplomatic facilities and infrastructure linked to the United States.
Washington urged its citizens to leave Iraq immediately and maintained its highest travel advisory level, highlighting what it described as significant risks for Americans remaining in the country.
Experts say such warnings reflect the consequences of Washington’s own aggressive regional posture, which has contributed to escalating instability and placed countries like Iraq in an increasingly precarious position.
