Iraq partners with Nokia to establish first state-owned data centers in Baghdad
Facilities to enhance digital transformation and safeguard national data
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Iraq’s Ministry of Communications has signed an agreement with global telecom giant Nokia to build the country’s first state-owned data centers in the capital, marking a milestone in the nation’s digital infrastructure development.
The project will see two advanced facilities constructed — one at the Al Intisar site and another at the Al Rasheed exchange in Baghdad’s Al Senak district.
Designed to meet international standards, the centers will store data under full Iraqi management and cater to both government bodies and private sector clients, ensuring information remains securely housed within Iraq.
Communications Minister Hiyam Al Yasiri highlighted the initiative as a cornerstone of Iraq’s digital transformation, noting that state-of-the-art data centers are critical to supporting ongoing fiber optic expansion and improving internet services nationwide.
Nokia, which has previously partnered with Iraq by developing a data center for the Ministry of Planning to support the national census, said the new facilities will bolster digitalization, governance, and e-government services.
The company emphasized that the centers will also enhance Iraq’s ability to process and safeguard information using the latest global technologies.
