Iraq launches Plan to drive economic growth and infrastructure modernization
New five-year strategy focuses on diversification, strategic projects, and administrative reforms
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Iraq’s Ministry of Planning has announced a comprehensive five-year National Development Plan for 2024–2028, aiming to accelerate economic diversification, improve infrastructure, and promote sustainable development across the country.
Unveiled on Monday, the roadmap sets out five core programs focusing on human capital, administrative reform, and sectoral modernization.
Ministry spokesperson Abd al-Zahra al-Hindawi told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the plan reflects Iraq’s commitment to building a competitive, resilient economy that can meet the demands of a rapidly evolving regional landscape.
Among the plan’s top priorities is economic diversification, with a shift toward enhancing local production chains and supporting emerging industries such as agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing.
The strategy also highlights the importance of education and healthcare development to strengthen human capital.
Key infrastructure initiatives are central to the plan, including the Development Road project—a major regional transport corridor—and the Al-Faw Grand Port, envisioned as a gateway for global trade and logistics.
These projects are expected to deepen Iraq’s economic integration with regional and international markets.
The plan was developed through collaboration between 15 expert committees representing government institutions, the private sector, and academia.
It includes modern governance tools such as digital administration, innovation frameworks, and a robust system for monitoring and evaluation to track implementation progress.
Officials say the 2024–2028 strategy is designed to create a stable environment for private investment, enhance public services, and ensure Iraq’s long-term economic sustainability.
