Iran signs deal with Russia to build eight new nuclear power plants
Four facilities planned in Bushehr as Tehran advances nuclear energy program amid US pressures to curtail nuclear programs
TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — Iran has signed a major agreement with Russia to construct eight new nuclear power plants across the country, with four of the facilities slated for the southern province of Bushehr, a senior lawmaker confirmed on Monday.
Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, revealed the development following an official visit by commission members to the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and its affiliated facilities, including the Tehran Research Reactor.
According to Rezaei, the agreement marks a significant step forward in expanding Iran’s nuclear energy infrastructure, with construction already progressing at multiple sites.
He noted that the delegation also toured the AEOI’s radioisotope production complex, where they were briefed on recent advancements and ongoing projects in medical and industrial isotope production.
Rezaei further quoted Mohammad Eslami, head of the AEOI, as saying that construction of Units 2 and 3 at the Bushehr nuclear power plant is being undertaken entirely by domestic Iranian firms, highlighting the country’s growing self-sufficiency in the sector.
Commission Chair Ebrahim Azizi emphasized the symbolic importance of the delegation’s visit to the AEOI, stating that it conveyed a clear message to Iran’s adversaries regarding the country’s unwavering commitment to its nuclear program.
“Iran’s nuclear industry is not negotiable. We will defend it resolutely to the very end,” Azizi said, asserting the commission’s full support for the continued development of the nation’s nuclear capabilities.
